A.J. Green – Cincinnati Bengals

2014 Salary: $3,059,739

2015 Status: $10,176,000

Julio Jones – Atlanta Falcons

2014 Salary: $2,581,875

2015 Status: $10,176,000

The top two receivers from the 2011 draft are in exactly the same situation for this coming offseason. Both will be transferring from their base rookie contract to their option-year that is attached to first-round selections. This means that they will carry the same cap number next year if they don’t get a new deal.

Both Green and Jones are amazing players who deserve to be paid among the highest salaries at their position. If they play under that player-option, that’s exactly what they’ll be. Only four receivers are set to earn more next season. Only one wide receiver, Miami’s Mike Wallace, made more than that value this season.

There is simply no reason for either player to carry such a large salary cap number for next season. By signing long-term deals, the players can actually make more money, and have lower salary-cap numbers. It is win-win for the team and player for long contracts to be signed.
