Contrary to rumors, defenseman Ryan Whitney isn’t headed to the Philadelphia Flyers

Ryan Whitney was one of the young-ish players this off-season who failed to get contracts, and skated off to Europe.

In light of former Arizona Coyotes fourth line forward Paul Bissonnette getting a chance to exercise his out clause with the EIHL Cardiff Devils, it seemed possible that rumors of Whitney getting calls from the Philadelphia Flyers could have been true. The blue liner is a former US Olympian, and has 259 points (50G, 209A) over the course of his NHL career.

According to Whitney’s agent Paul Krepella, though, this isn’t the case.

Krepella went on the record Sunday afternoon, denying that the Flyers had reached out to his client with a contract offer. Had it been true, Whitney could have used his out clause with the KHL’s HC Sochi, but it looks like he’ll remain in Russia.

While fans may be upset to hear this, Whitney seems to have already made peace with his departure from North American hockey. Upon signing his contract with HC Sochi, the defenseman took to Twitter to express his delight.

Never change, Ryan Whitney.

During his time without a contract, Whitney had been recording a podcast with fellow unemployed skater Biznasty2.0, aka the aforementioned Paul Bissonnette. Looks like both guys will be back to business now.
