The three-year stint for JJ Barea as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves has officially come to a close on Monday morning as the team finally cut ties with the pint-sized point guard.

Rumors about Barea being waived had been rampant for a few days now but the Timberwolves were hopeful they’d be able to squeeze out a last minute trade to a team in need. Nobody wanted JJ Barea’s expiring contract though and the team cut the cord this morning.

Local Minnesota media didn’t see JJ Barea at practice which promoted questions about where the veteran was. Head coach and president Flip Saunders confirmed that the team had waived Barea.

Releasing JJ Barea isn’t surprising as even the point guard knew his time with the Timberwolves organization was all but over. Reports had surfaced a few days ago suggesting the veteran hopes to clear waivers and sign with the Dallas Mavericks for the remainder of the season.

Barea of course played for the Mavs from 2006 to 2011 and experienced the most efficient years of his career in Dallas, even though his numbers were better with Minnesota as he received more floor time.

If JJ Barea does clear waivers and signs with the Dallas Mavericks, it’s not expected he’ll see much time as he’ll be nothing more than depth on a roster full of guards. Still, there aren’t many places better to sign as a free agent outside of the Dallas Mavericks, especially given Barea’s history with the franchise.
