Colorado Avalanche netminder Semyon Varlamov is being sued over alleged domestic abuse allegations

Just a week after Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov was arrested under suspicions of domestic abuse, it looks like the NHL‘s last big domestic abuse case is back in the headlines, as well.

Last season, Colorado Avalanche netminder Semyon Varlamov was arrested under suspicion of domestic abuse, although the charges were eventually dropped.

Now, his ex-girlfriend, Evgeniya Vavrinyuk, has filed a lawsuit against the russian skater. She claims that the abuse had been going on since December of 2012, with Varlamov striking out against her violently after consuming alcohol and then begging for forgiveness after sobering up. She claims that the case was dropped for ‘lack of evidence’, complaining that law enforcement even shook Varlamov’s hand and wished him the best of luck with his season, after the dropping of the case.

This won’t be the first time an athlete will have been taken to civil court after failing to be indicted in criminal court- the most famous instance of this was when OJ Simpson was acquitted during his murder trial, but lost the civil suit filed against him in the subsequent time period.

The league has failed to suspend Varlamov at the moment, although fans can be certain that the league will make a statement regarding the lawsuit as soon as more details are known.
