The Kansas City Royals knocked off the San Francisco Giants in game 6 of the World Series and the young Yordano Ventura did so with a heavy heart.

The Kansas City Royals forced a game 7 in the 2014 World Series last night. Yordano Ventura toed the mound for game 6 and twirled a masterful performance, while getting 10 runs of support, and got the win for Kansas City. More importantly, he did so with the heaviest of hearts.

Immediately noticeable last night was that Yordano Ventura was going to wear his emotions on his sleeve, or maybe, his head. Donning the Royals blue cap, Ventura had emblazoned “RIP O.T. #18” on it.

He was referring to Oscar Taveras. If you haven’t heard by now, Taveras, a native of Ventura’s Dominican Republic, was tragically killed in a car accident on Monday. Two days later, still grieving his loss, Ventura delivered one of the most spectacular performances in recent World Series history. Throughout the outing, it was apparent that Ventura was fueled with emotion. Now, Major League Baseball will be taking his cap to the Hall of Fame. During the game, the St. Louis Cardinals also showed that they were paying tribute to their late outfield. Leaving on light on at Busch Stadium, we may have been gifted one of the most amazing baseball photos of the season.

Taveras was just 23 years old, and was one of the best young players in the Cardinals organization. A tragic loss transcends the diamond, and sends ripples throughout the Major League Baseball world. Ventura paying his respects, and Taveras looking down on a game he loved will be one of the better moments of the 2014 season.

Good on the Cooperstown and the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame for giving that Royals hat a worthy resting place, and good on you Yordano Ventura, for being a human being that more should emulate.
