For much of the previous offseason the Detroit Pistons and Greg Monroe went back-and-forth regarding a contract extension. The two sides never found a middle ground and Monroe, to the shock of many ended up accepting a one-year qualifying offer.
Such will allow the big man to become an unrestricted free agent at season end and you’d have to figure he’d want as much playing time as possible in effort to secure a massive contract.
Yet the Pistons have decided Greg Monroe will come off the bench this season, at least for now. You’d believe that would be a sentiment that would frustrate the former Georgetown product but Monroe is playing the good teammate role suggesting he’s not worried about coming off the pine.
“That’s not a problem,” Monroe said of coming off the bench. “I know you guys like to make a big deal out of it, but it doesn’t matter to me. I just have to make sure I do the things I need to do once I get on the court to help my team win. If I’m playing the first six minutes or the second six minutes, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m not worried about that. I’m just worried about once I’m on the court, what I have to do to help my team.”
Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy doesn’t like the three-headed front court combination of Andre Drummond, Josh Smith and Greg Monroe, thus opted to have one play a reserve role. That ended up being Monroe who seems content with the idea.
Still you have to wonder how long he’ll be comfortable with such given it’s likely going to eat into his new deal if the role continues for an extended period.
