No matter how well-trained you are, completing a run of over 26.2 miles is not an easy task.

Now attempt to do it while facing strong headwinds which included gusts of over 40mph. Pretty difficult, right? Well, that’s exactly what 50,000 runners faced on Sunday morning as they ran in the New York City Marathon as a biting cold storm made it’s way into the Northeast.

While snow stayed to the north (at least during the race) the temperatures dipped in the morning hours before the marathon began and runners were understandably doing their best to stay warm. It wasn’t easy with the incrediably strong winds which made it difficult for television cameras to remain steady.

Multiple times during the event the main camera could be seen shaking as it attempted to focus on the pack of runners coming its way.

Those broadcasting the iconic marathon suggested the wind could add a few additional minutes to each runners time.

As for the final results, Mary Keitany of Kenya won the women’s race with a time of 2:25:07. Just seconds behind was Kenyan Jemima Sumgong who finished in 2:25:10. You can’t help but wonder how much of a factor the weather was in regards to the final standings.

Sara Moreira of Portugal finished in a distant third place with a time of 2:25:59.

As for the men, Kenya’s Wilson Kipsang won the men’s race with a time of 2:10:59. Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia came in a very close second with a time of 2:11:06.

Difficult as the run was, it’s possible the most challenging task of the day was for the volunteers who handed out refreshments to the runners. Cups and drinks were seen blowing off tables and all over the New York City Marathon course.
