When the Oklahoma City Thunder lost Kevin Durant for the first month or two of the season with a broken foot, fans of the franchise were living out their worst nightmare. Or so they thought.
Just weeks later star guard Russell Westbrook found himself sidelined for 6-8 weeks and the once nightmare scenario had become nothing short of horrifying. The Oklahoma City Thunder without both Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook?!
As expected the Thunder struggled to start the season before securing a win over the Sacramento Kings, who oddly enough have started out the season very hot at 5-2. The woeful play has caught the eye of many including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban who suggested the OKC Thunder simply tank their season to get themselves another star in the draft.
“The question I don’t think anybody has asked is, why don’t they pull a David Robinson and try to get Tim Duncan?” Cuban said this past weekend.
On the surface that may make a bit of sense considering there are some big talents likely to be available come the 2015 NBA Draft. Of course, the Thunder would not be guaranteed such and they’ll still likely make the playoffs despite missing both Durant and Westbrook for the first month or two of the season.
Once they’re in, they’ll be one of the best teams in the NBA so tanking may not seem to make that much sense unless things go really sour.
Mark Cuban meanwhile has plenty of reason as to why he’d like to see the Thunder give up the ghost on their season as it would significantly increase the chances of the Dallas Mavericks making noise in the tough Western Conference.
