Jim Harbaugh is the current coach of the 49ers but his future beyond this season is a big mystery as his time appears to be running out in San Francisco, but could his time in the NFL be running out as well?
Harbaugh is the top target for the Michigan Wolverines who want him to come back to his alma mater and restore the legacy in Ann Arbor after the program has fallen on hard times after recent hires of Rich Rodriguez and the recently fired Brady Hoke has seen the winningest program in college football fail to even make a bowl game this year.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Harbaugh is being encouraged by his family and friends to take the job at Michigan, but he is torn because he wants to remain in the NFL and continue his quest to win a Super Bowl.
“49ers HC Jim Harbaugh’s family and friends have been encouraging him to take the Michigan HC job, but he is torn because his heart is in the NFL.”
Wherever Harbaugh is coaching next year, he’ll have a number of options available.
“Harbaugh first would like to see what head coaching opportunities come available – and he is likely to be a top choice for a handful of teams – before getting back to Michigan with an answer, per sources. Harbaugh also is aware of the fact that Michigan might not be able to wait for him, especially when it might not even land the coach who is believed to be the school’s top choice. Plus, college football recruiting is in full swing, and the longer a school waits, the more of a disadvantage it can be. It leaves both sides, Michigan and Harbaugh, in a tough and delicate spot, even though they have mutual interest in each other, per sources.”
Harbaugh will finish the season for the 49ers and make his decision as soon as possible. Michigan has reportedly offered him $8 million per year which would make him the highest-paid coach in college football and with his family and friends encouraging him to return to his alma mater, could that be enough for the Wolverines to finally get their man?
