When MLB free agency opened up, the belief was that most teams in need of pitching (read: all) would engage in bidding wars for Jon Lester and Max Scherzer.

Such did take place for Lester but things have been relatively quiet on the Max Scherzer front. Much of that is likely due to his absurd salary demands which is said to be north of a $200 million dollar contract.

One team linked to Scherzer were the San Francisco Giants, who lost out on the Jon Lester sweepstakes, but general manager Brian Sabean says the team has not talked to the former Detroit Tigers arm and have no plans to do so.

Could it be posturing on the part of Brian Sabean and the San Francisco Giants? Perhaps, though it’s more likely to be the honest truth as they’re not willing to throw down that type of cash for Max Scherzer. They aren’t alone either as the New York Yankees among others are said to have no interest at his current price tag.

A Scott Boras client, it’s very possible Max Scherzer may wait until until closer to the season to sign a contract as he’ll be banking on a team in desperate need once players like James Shields have been taken off the market.

As for the San Francisco Giants, unlike Scherzer, they have shown interest in the aforementioned James Shields though recently re-signed Jake Peavy which may have put in a dent in their pursuit.

Potentially signing Shields isn’t out of the question though unless Max Scherzer’s price comes down significantly, it doesn’t sound like he’ll be pitching int he Bay Area.
