7. Earl Morrall

A journeyman backup, Earl Morrall defined “being at the right place at the right time.”

This time, after backing up Johnny Unitas for a good chunk of his career, he was Bob Griese’s backup on the 1972 Miami Dolphins.  Yes, THOSE Miami Dolphins.

He went 9-0 in relief of an injured Griese, throwing for 1,360 yards with 11 touchdowns and led the Dolphins to playoff wins over the Browns and Steelers to get the Phins to Super Bowl VII.  Morrall was hurt in the AFC Championship game against the Steelers, which forced Griese back into duty.

Morrall didn’t play in the Super Bowl, but even without stellar numbers, he was still a winner wherever he went.
