The Miami Heat’s point guard wanted to make sure everything was done correctly
Miami Heat point guard Norris Cole just earned himself a spot on Shaqtin’ a Fool Thursday night, on TNT. During the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cole passed the ball in bounds to emerging sensation Hassan Whiteside. He decided he wanted seconds on inbound passing duties.

After Cole inbounded to Whiteside, Whiteside passed the ball to back to Cole.
The only logical explanation is that Cole didn’t think the ball was officially passed in bounds. He directed Whiteside out of bounds to pass it again in bounds to Cole.
Problem was the first one counted.
Referee Violet Palmer was quick to make the out of bounds call, along with Timberwolves’ guard Ricky Rubio and the thousands of anxious fans in the Target Center.
Of all the dumb plays in basketball, this has to be up there.
The ref signaled the play was on yet Cole didn’t think it was and thus the ball was turned back over to Minnesota.
Even worse for the Heat, they ended up losing to Minnesota by a score of 102-101. Losing by one, the Heat could have really used that one possession which they threw away.
Always assume the ball is in play.
