4. Philip Rivers

When looking at Philip Rivers’ stats, it’s hard to believe he hasn’t won a Super Bowl in his 11 year career. He currently is No. 20 on the all-time passing yards list (No. 6 among active quarterbacks) with 36,655. His career passer rating of 96.0 is fourth all-time among NFL quarterbacks with 1,500 passing attempts. Despite these impressive stats, Rivers and the rest of the Chargers have yet to be able gel at the right time.

The closest he has come to winning a Super Bowl was during the 2007 season, where he carried the Chargers to the AFC title game against the New England Patriots. But Tom Brady proved to be too much for San Diego and Rivers, ultimately sending them back to the drawing board.

Since then, the Chargers have not gotten out of the divisional round of the playoffs. Since the departure of LaDainian Tomlinson in 2009, the Chargers have not had the established run game that came with the future hall of famer. Therefore, Rivers has been under more pressure to make plays, causing his turnover numbers to rise in recent years.

But this doesn’t mean Rivers is unable to win a Super Bowl. Even though his throwing motion is unorthodox and when his play suffers the Chargers have virtually no chance, Rivers still is a great quarterback. He has a career total of 20 fourth quarter comebacks. The clutch gene that Rivers possesses along with his excellent decision making skills make him one of the best second tier quarterbacks in the league. Unfortunately, he will probably have to wait for the right situation to come along to win a Super Bowl. Whether that is in San Diego or not remains to be seen.
