The New York Rangers winger sparked a skirmish by hitting a Boston Bruins player in the face with the butt end of his stick.

New York Rangers winger Tanner Glass was ejected in the closing seconds of Saturday’s game for hitting Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid in the face with his stick.

As time was winding down in Boston’s 4-2 win, McQuiad checked Glass into the boards. Glass, who doesn’t provide much for the Rangers outside of fighting ability, responded by pulling McQuaid in by the jersey and hitting the Bruin in the face with the butt end of his stick.

A five-minute major and game misconduct doesn’t really mean much with no time left on the clock, but more is likely on the way for Glass. While NHL disciple isn’t the most consistent thing, Glass’ actions certainly seem like something that would warrant a fine and multi-game suspension.

The Rangers currently have 101 points, best in the Eastern Conference with eight games to play, and got goalie Henrik Lundqvist back from injury on Saturday. Glass has not been a major reason why, as he scored his first goal of the season on Thursday to being him to 367th out of 368 forwards with at least 400 minutes played with 0.36 points per 60 minutes.

Boston has taken a strange road to its 75 points, with a slow start followed by a mid-season surge and six-game losing streak that was broken on Saturday. All of that has currently put the Bruins in eighth place in the East.

That means the two teams, who don’t particularly care for each other, would play in the first round of the postseason if current standings hold. There will surely be some animosity left over from Glass’ hit if the series does end up happening.
