Jared Leto Joker character revealed (Photo)

The first picture of Jared Leto as the Joker has been released for the upcoming film Suicide Squad.

Jared Leto will be taking on the role of the Joker in the David Ayer-directed film Suicide Squad, which is set to release sometime in 2016. Fans have been not-so-patiently waiting to see just how Jared Leto looks as the iconic villain. Well, the first picture of Leto as the Joker has finally been released. Director David Ayer tweeted out the photo today.


Leto definitely looks like the Joker. In the picture he has donned the trademark green hair, purple glove, bleached skin, and red lipstick. There are some differences in his appearance, though. Leto’s joker is sporting some tattoos as well as what looks like silver plating on his front teeth.

What I find the most interesting abut this photo is the iconic smile tattooed on Leto’s right arm. The smile is to Joker as the bat is to Batman. In Tim Burton’s Batman, the Joker’s mouth becomes stuck in a permanent smile after he falls into a vat of chemicals. Christopher Nolan tackled this issue in the Dark Knight by giving Joker a “smile” in the form of scars on his face. It would seem that the Suicide Squad is giving Joker his permanent smile in the form of a forearm tattoo.

Leto has some big shoes to fill. He is going to undoubtedly be compared with Heath Ledger’s Dark Knight Joker. Ledger’s Joker is largely considered one of the best depictions of any supervillian in cinema history. It also spawned countless cringe-inducing imitation videos.

Leto does look pretty good as the Joker, though. He has that going for him. He also has acting chops and as a musician certainly has a flair for the dramatic. It will be interesting to see just what Leto brings to the table when Suicide Squad debuts August 5th, 2016.
