The New Jersey Devils made a big addition to the front office when they hired longtime Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero.

The New Jersey Devils shook the foundation of the NHL Monday, when longtime general manager Lou Lamoriello relinquished his position as general manager.

Lamoriello had been gm of the Devils since 1987. He will stay on as the team’s president.

Then they continued the big news by hiring former Penguins gm Ray Shero to take over officially as the team’s new general manager.

Shero is a big time move for the Devils. He helped construct the Penguins team that won a Stanley Cup and is a proven successful front office commodity.

For the longest time, the New Jersey Devils were one of the more dominant franchises in the NHL, having dominated with Martin Brodeur at goaltender.

After three Stanley Cups in eight seasons and a trip back to the finals in 2012, the Devils have missed the playoffs entirely for three straight seasons. The team fired head coach Peter DeBoer after the team’s failures.

One big reason for Lamoriello stepping down, could be his age. He is 72 years old and perhaps at this point in his life might be better suited in the role of president overseeing the entire operation. Shero has shown he can be one of the best and build a winner.

Suddenly when it looked like the Devils were trending in the wrong direction, they now have a winning combination in the front office that can finally put a winner back on the ice in New Jersey.

Shero has said that he wants to go more toward an offensive minded team, which is a stark contrast to the Devils team that built their success on championship-level defense.

The New Jersey Devils shocked the hockey world on Monday, and they are ready to rise again.
