Scary Options

vs Phillies. Eric Surkamp. 17. player. 71. Surkamp gets the call today for LA in place of Carlos Frias who landed on the DL with lower back tightness.  Surkamp hasn’t had a ton of MLB success in the past but he has been pitching well in Triple-A going 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA and 22 K’s in his last five starts.  Surkamp is in a nice matchup at home against the Phillies, so he’s a flier to consider although there’s not certainty on what to expect give his 6.20 ERA in 42 MLB games mostly out of bullpen.. Los Angeles Dodgers

Cincinnati Reds. @ Nationals. Andrew DeSclafani. 16. player. 61. DeSclafani was hammered for six runs on 11 hits in 6.2 innings in his last start.  He has been better on the road (3-2, 2.45 ERA) than at home (2-4, 5.11 ERA), but he’s still risky since he has slowed quite a bit from his hot start right after callup. He did beat the Nats in his first outing against them allowing two runs on eight hits in six innings.

Fister has been up and down this season allowing four runs or more in three of his last four starts but throwing seven shutout innings in his other outing. He comes into this start with a 4.34 ERA and a 3-4 record.  While he may be able to get a win if his offense shows up, I’d be very careful based on his lack of consistency since coming off the DL.. Washington Nationals. vs Reds. Doug Fister. 15. player. 90

player. 7. Volquez started the season strong but has stumbled a bit in June and early July.  He has only completed the sixth inning twice in his last seven starts and has allowed three runs or more in four of those outings.  Volquez faces the Rays tonight which should be a good matchup for him, but his recent form is definitely cause for some caution.. Kansas City Royals. vs Rays. Edinson Volquez. 14
