NBA teams have been able to talk to players and hash out the finer details of contract for a week now, but today is the first day that those deals can be made official. Not everyone has a deal lined up for them, as former Suns, Knicks and Mavericks forward Amar’e Stoudemire is among the veterans without a prepared deal waiting for him as the free agency moratorium lifts.
Players have been able to officially put ink to paper on their new contracts since midnight, but Amare might be without a deal for a few more hours. That doesn’t mean he won’t have a deal though, as the Miami Heat seem to be closing in on a deal to land him before the weekend arrives.
According to ESPN New York and passed along by Sun Sentinel scribe Ira Winderman, the Heat are close to agreeing to a deal with Stoudemire that will see him play next season with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
The Heat have been generally quiet on the free agent front this summer. They re-signed Goran Dragic on a max deal, gave Dwyane Wade $20 million to come back but really didn’t branch out past that. Bringing in Stoudemire is a sneaky good signing by Pat Riley, as it gives the Heat front court depth they need heading into next season.
Hassan Whiteside is going to be the center of the future, but just like how Kevin Garnett is mentoring a young Karl-Anthony Towns in Minnesota, Stoudemire can pass along knowledge to a young Whiteside who is looking to play himself into a max deal in the future.
