The Kansas City Chiefs did not record a single touchdown from a wide receiver last year. General manager John Dorsey had to have been horrified and embarrassed by that stat, because he gave the unit a makeover. Longtime standout Dwayne Bowe was cut because of his bloated salary, upgraded by Jeremy Maclin for five years and $55 million.

Dorsey also drafted Chris Conley out of the University of Georgia in the third round and Da’Ron Brown of Southern Illinois in the seventh, hoping to find a diamond in the rough. De’Anthony Thomas has also been moved to be a full-time receiver, while Dorsey re-signed veteran Jason Avant.

Yet, the starter opposite of Maclin is likely to be second-year undrafted free-agent Albert Wilson. Wilson showed promise at the end of the 2014 season, but Wayne would be a clear upgrade for a team trying to dethrone the Denver Broncos in the AFC West. Wayne is a pro and could slide into multiple roles for the Chiefs, helping both in the slot and on the outside.

Alex Smith is largely a product of what is around him. After getting Justin Houston signed on a long-term deal, Kansas City has ample cap space to make a move should it want to. Adding Wayne would only enhance a group that was one of the worst in the NFL last season, and give Smith another option if Maclin and tight end Travis Kelce are covered.
