5. Don Nelson should return to the NBA

By: Andy Liu (@AndyKHLiu) – Hardwood Paroxysm

Don Nelson is permanently on vacation. At this very moment, there is little doubt he has a bourbon on the rocks in his left hand, cigar in the right, inhaling both while surveying the gorgeous sunset somewhere in Hawaii worthy of a heavily filtered Instagram post. Don Nelson is relaxed, confident, and joyous that the team he once coached has just finished fulfilling his dreams as a head coach and, well, that’s where we end and begin.

Nelson is a mad genius of some sort. He’d throw together lineups that run away from not only logic but the very notion of common sense. Stephen Jackson at point guard? Andris Biedrins handling the ball at the 3PT line? Baron Davis at center? Ok, the last one might have been a stretch but it probably happened somewhere in his 34-year coaching career.

The Golden State Warriors won an NBA championship in 2015. The Golden State Warriors won an NBA championship starting Draymond Green at the center position for the last three games of the NBA Finals. Against LeBron James. Down 1-2. They did not lose another game.

Don Nelson might be a mad genius but he’s more genius now than ever, more entertaining than the legion of snoozing play-callers in the league, and always ready to go on radio stations slurring words about Mikki Moore.

The Mike D’Antoni before Mike D’Antoni might not have been a good coach at the end of his career, or even a great one ever in his tenure, but we do know one thing: if ever there is someone that fit right into today’s world, run lineups where Kobe Bryant would play center, Don Nelson is that man. He’s on vacation now but the NBA as currently run is his true calling. Forget summer vacation. We can do this year-round.
