Pitching

The thing that has gotten the New York Mets this far is their starting pitching. Matt Harvey’s comeback from Tommy John surgery has been successful, even if he hasn’t been as dominant as he was before the procedure.

The pitcher that has really developed is last year’s NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom. He reached the All-Star Game for the first time in his career and dominated in his only inning. The right-hander is currently 11-6 with a 2.03 ERA and 152 strikeouts in 146.2 innings.

Jon Niese was in danger of losing his rotation spot, now he’s been one of the team’s most solid starting pitchers. Since July, he’s 4-1 in seven starts. Niese is off to a blistering start in August, with a 1.93 ERA and 11 strikeouts (to one walk) in two starts.

Oh yeah, there’s also rookie phenom Noah Syndergaard, who is 6-1 at home with a 1.57 ERA and has 106 strikeouts in 98.1 innings. Bartolo Colon is a veteran leader on the staff. They also have top prospect Steven Matz who is on a rehab assignment and may be back in September.

The Mets have a .860 win percentage when they score four or more runs. That’s the best in the NL and the second best in the majors.

This is why they needed to get some offense. A little bit of help and the pitching can take it the rest of the way.
