10. Deacon Jones

Deacon Jones was one of the most feared defenders in the history of the National Football League, spending the majority of his career with the Los Angeles Rams. Jones specialized in one things, sacks, a term he actually coined.

“You take all the offensive linemen and put them in a burlap bag, and then you take a baseball bat and beat on the bag. You’re sacking them, you’re bagging them. And that’s what you’re doing with a quarterback,” Jones told the Los Angeles Times in 1999.

It is estimated that Jones has 173½ sacks over the course of his career, which would put him in third on the all-time list behind Reggie White and Bruce Smith.

Sacks didn’t become an official stat until 1982, but had they been during Jones career he would own the record for most in a single-season. Jones had 26 sacks in one season, 24 in the following, both totals are higher than the current record for sacks in a single season. And Jones did it in 14 games to boot.

Outside of sacks, Jones was an eight-time Pro Bowler and an eight-time All-Pro. Twice he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year and he is a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee.

The only thing Jones’ career is missing is a Super Bowl win. Jones’ teams only went to the playoffs three times, losing all three games.
