David Stern hasn’t been in the news for a while, which means he might end up running to be New York’s next mayor.

When David Stern was in charge of the NBA, his reign was polarizing in just about every way it could have been. While he did things right and is synonymous with the boom the league experienced in the 90s, a lot of his critics chalk this up to him just being there and not actually having a lot to do with the success the NBA had.

That’s unfair, as even if you hate Stern for acting like Jabba the Hutt throwing his weight around, he was responsible for some good things that have happened to the NBA. That hardly makes him perfect, but it makes him a prime candidate to get into the political game.

From the sounds of it, that’s exactly what Stern might do.

According to the New York Post, Stern is being urged to run or mayor of New York — and the reason he’s considering it is classic David Stern.

"“He’s pretty bored,” said one source. “He’s always been interested in politics, and he’s always been interested in running for office.”"

You can just see Stern with his characteristic shrug when asked why he decided to become mayor of New York.

And yes, he decided to become the mayor, because with Stern there is no election — just a lot of Stern.

If elected, it’s going to be amazing to watch Stern deadpan about major societal issues he has to deal with and shrug it all off like he patently did throughout his run as commissioner of the NBA. This almost needs to happen, as it’s just too perfect not to. David Stern has as much motivation you’d expect out of a politician with all the weight to throw around.

If anything, he has Knicks fans in his pocket. After all, he gave them Patrick Ewing in the 80s, and now he’s going to come calling like The Godfather for a past due favor.
