5. Patriots WR Situation

While Tom Brady’s status for the start of the season continues to be fought out in the courtroom in New York, expect him to get plenty of work on Friday against the Panthers in the Patriots final preseason game. One of the reasons Brady needs to get as many reps as possible is that there has been a ton of turnover in the Patriots WR corps and there could be potential for new fantasy football options to emerge.

Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell have both been struggling with injury this preseason and neither has played a snap in the first two preseason games.  Both seem unlikely to play this week, and their status going forward is unclear.  Edelman seems likely to return in time for week 1, but LaFell has been rumored to be in danger of starting the season on the PUP list.

Those injuries combined with Brandon Gibson and Brian Tyms season-ending injuries forced the Patriots to bring in veteran Reggie Wayne on a one-year deal.  Wayne didn’t look to have much left last year with Indy, but the Patriots have revived plenty of careers in the past.

Another potential option who could emerge as a target given the lack of depth is Danny Amendola who has had a good start to camp coming off a strong playoff run. Undrafted rookie Chris Harper has also made some waves this preseason filling in for the injured veterans.

Who plays what role and how involved each option will be is going to be fascinating to watch since the Patriots spread the ball around and definitely have enough passing offense to make whoever gets reps at WR fantasy relevant.
