Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is pro-Confederate flag when it comes to NASCAR events.

Over the summer, there was a massive controversy over the always controversial subject off the Confederate flag and it’s representation of a not so awesome period in American history. For many, the Confederate flag represents slavery, oppression and racism while others contest that it’s nothing more than a sign of southern heritage.

The slaying in Charleston sparked the hottest debate we’ve had in recent years about whether or not we should fly the flag at all — with the overwhelming response being a defiant no.

But not everyone was ready to give up the flag, and many southerns continue to fly the flag not only because they think it’s a part of their heritage but now out of defiance to those who want them to take the flag down. NASCAR legend Richard Petty is among the flag’s supporters, and he’s now been joined by a Republican presidential candidate.

No, it’s not the candidate you might be thinking. Instead, it’s candidate Ben Carson who is coming out in support of the Confederate flag and NASCAR fans right to fly it if they so choose.

"“Swastikas are a symbol of hate for some people, too. And yet they still exist in museums and places like that. If it’s a majority of people in that area who want it to fly, I certainly wouldn’t take it down.”"

Carsons has had a rough campaign thus far and is in a position where he needs to run out and try to get as many votes as he can from the likes of Donald Trump and Jeb Bush — the two  intellectual front runners in the GOP party at the moment, which is saying a lot. Carson is ahead of Bush in the polls though, and this is no doubt going to help him narrow the gap even more on Trump in the red states down south.

Like most things that have come out of Carson’s mouth during his campaign, his reasoning for allowing the flag to fly is insanely flawed — but it’s his campaign and clearly no one is telling him how to run it.
