30. Bill O’Brien and the Houston Texans selecting Christian Hackenberg saved New York from making yet another high round flub on a starting quarterback. Hackenberg has the physical look of an NFL, and that’s about it. With Jared Goff on the board, the Jets can’t resist and they’re better off for it.

Goff has gorgeous mechanics and, more importantly, has shown the ability to improve. He’s increased his accuracy, as well as his yards per throw, in each of his three seasons under center at Cal. As a sophomore he shredded defenses for nearly 4,000 yards (331.1 per game) and 35 touchdowns (to only seven interceptions). In 2015 he’s already exceeded the interception number (nine already) but that’s mainly due to a five-pick game against Utah.

The last time the Jets drafted a California native quarterback things didn’t work out so well. However, Goff is no Mark Sanchez. He’s putting up numbers without nearly the talent Sanchez had at USC. Also, he’ll enter an arena without the bombastic nature of the Jets’ previous regime. Goff is beloved by his teammates both on and off the field and can lend even more cool to a locker room desperately trying to stay off the back pages.
. QB. California. Jared Goff. 23. player
