Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Flip Saunders died on Sunday at the age of 60, and Kevin Garnett posted a tribute.

When Flip Saunders took a step back from the Minnesota Timberwolves this offseason to battle cancer, we all thought he was doing so to get healthy and eventually return. It’s starting to sound more and more like Saunders knew he was going to die but didn’t want to make it a big deal.

It was pretty much the embodiment of who Saunders was. Kevin Garnett knew all about that, and is paying tribute to his old coach.

After news of Saunders’ untimely death made the rounds, Garnett posted a tribute to his former head coach and mentor that is going to polarize fans:

If you have a problem with this tribute for being self serving, you really have to blame the existence of social media. We all knew that Garnett was going to post something and we were waiting on it — and we all knew it was going to be something like this.

What we should be talking about is how Garnett just lost a father figure in his life and mentor who helped mold him into the player he is today. The Wolves of today — with Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine and Karl-Anthony Towns — was very much being built in the mold of what Saunders and KG wanted.

Now that vision is going to live on solely with KG, but it can’t  be taken lightly how hard this must be for a guy who Saunders is and always will be synonymous with helping mold.
