Oklahoma City Thunder – Moving from Seattle

The Seattle SuperSonics have an extensive history, including the fact that the organization claimed the NBA title following the 1978-79 season. Unfortunately for the good people of Seattle, the franchise no longer inhabits the largest city in the state of Washington, as Clay Bennett and an ownership group from Oklahoma City shifted the franchise after a somewhat misleading purchase process.

In October 2006, Howard Schultz sold the Sonics to Bennett and his group for a reported $350 million, and within months, Bennett was making outrageous demands of the local population in Seattle, seeking hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars for a new arena. When that did not come to pass, Bennett and his team of owners began a behind-the-scenes mission to relocate the team, and while the details become laborious at this point, they were ultimately successful as you can see from the new name of the franchise.

The fans of Seattle will never forget the actions of Bennett, fellow owner Aubrey McClendon and the rest of the crew for moving the franchise, especially under the guise of a story surrounding intentions to keep the team in Washington. For those fans that followed the team to Oklahoma City, there has been a great deal of success with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and company on the court, but the franchise unquestionably lost the Pacific Northwest with the actions of the ownership group, and it remains a black eye on the organization (at least in the minds of some) to this day.
