NBA: 5 disappointing teams so far this season
By John Buhler
5. Brooklyn Nets (3-11)
Even after clawing their way into the Eastern Conference Playoffs on the final day of the 2014-15 NBA regular season, many believed that the Brooklyn Nets would struggle to field a competitive team in 2015-16. The front office went all in on aging superstars like Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Joe Johnson to hopefully win an NBA Championship for their new Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov.
Garnett and Pierce are no longer with the organization and Johnson isn’t an All-Star shooting guard anymore. Brooklyn sacrificed its future carelessly and it’s costing them dearly in 2015-16. The only valuable trade assets the team has are often-injured center Brook Lopez and forward Thaddeus Young.
Under head coach Lionel Hollins, the Nets are 3-11, 29th in offensive rating (100.3) and 27th in defensive rating (108.3). All three of those statistics indicate the Brooklyn Nets are a bottom four team in the NBA. The problem with that is the Boston Celtics have the Nets’ 2016 unprotected first-round pick. It doesn’t serve Brooklyn to tank, but due to poor front office planning, it certainly looks like it.
What puts the Brooklyn Nets in the bottom five is that this was, for better or worse, a playoff team the year before. Last year’s team to the top-seeded Atlanta Hawks to six games, now they are essentially guaranteed to finish in the bottom six of the NBA. Once the Nets trade Brook Lopez away, this team becomes unwatchable.
Next: 4. Philadelphia 76ers (0-14)
