Sean Payton

Should Sean Payton finally leave the New Orleans Saints, he will probably have his pick of a next job. It’s not too often that a Super Bowl winning coach is out and available, especially one that has a tremendous amount of success like Sean Payton has.

If Philadelphia wants a name to be their next head coach if Chip Kelly leaves, then Sean Payton would make a great choice if he is available. In New Orleans, Payton and Drew Brees engineered a turnaround that had the Saints playing some of the most exciting football imaginable, which culminated in a Super Bowl.

The Eagles will need someone that can call an offense and create a team that can put points on the board. While the transition period for New Orleans has not been smooth these last couple of years, Payton is still a very good head coach in this league.

Would he want to go to a tough Philadelphia market? That’s a tough question to answer, but in the NFC East, where the division is perennially winnable to every team, Payton could thrive if he finds success. Can he make Sam Bradford a great quarterback? That might be asking a lot considering Bradford’s health issues, or if Bradford will still be there next season. Payton did great things with Drew Brees, who people once wrote off as an oft-injured quarterback. Why couldn’t he do the same thing with Bradford?

The fallout if Chip Kelly leaves is going to be huge in Philadelphia, considering the amount of talent he has traded away in three years and the type of talent he has put on the roster to run his style of offense. Adding a name like Sean Payton could soften that blow.
