David Price signs with Boston Red Sox: Winners and losers
Winner:
The Boston Red Sox needed an ace badly in the rotation. Last season, the Red Sox rotation was filled with guys that would be No. 4’s and No. 5’s on most teams, and as a result, the Red Sox finished last in the American League East.
With new general manager Dave Dombrowski coming over from Detroit, the Red Sox were getting a general manager that had made big moves before in his career with the Tigers. They also got a general manager who had learned a valuable lesson when he didn’t offer enough to Max Scherzer, and subsequently lost him to the Washington Nationals.
This time, Dombrowski made sure to offer up enough money that would land the big fish. Price had already been familiar with Dombrowski, as Dombrowski acquired Price from Tampa Bay when he was the general manager of the Tigers.
To be successful in the Major Leagues and a division like the American League East, a team needs a dominant ace to take the mound. The Red Sox are getting that in Price. It might not be enough to put them back in first place in the division, as the team needs help in other areas as well, but it’s a huge start for them.
The Boston Red Sox are very serious about competing again. With David Price on board, it won’t be long before they are doing so.
