David Price signs with Boston Red Sox: Winners and losers
With David Price signing a giant contract with the Boston Red Sox, wh0 are the winners and losers in the MLB as a result of the deal?
David Price has been officially paid. As the first big free agent target to fall for Major League Baseball this off-season, Price has secured himself a hefty contract from the Boston Red Sox, which will reportedly pay him $217 million over seven years, with a chance to opt-out after three.
Immediately it’s a jaw-dropping deal just to even think about. Everyone knew the 30-year-old was going to be paid a lot of money this off-season, but even still, $217 million is a lot of money. If Price goes out and dominates over the next three seasons, he could just as easily opt-out and pick up an even heftier deal, thanks in part to the rise of the size of contracts in baseball.
It was becoming apparent by the day in the off-season that Price wouldn’t be returning to the Toronto Blue Jays, the team he helped make the postseason in 2015, which was their first trip since the early ’90s.
He was the big fish in the off-season. Now that he’s landed in Boston with the Red Sox, everyone in Boston is hoping Price can take them from struggling to right back into being a postseason contender. It’s the first big move for the Red Sox to make as they move forward.
The real question is how will it pay off in the long run? With a big contract, the Red Sox surely believe that they are invested in a guy that will be able to produce for him, just has like he has done in both Tampa Bay and Toronto. They clearly believe that Price will be good for all seven years and weren’t afraid to give him a big deal.
When there’s a deal this big in Major League Baseball, it doesn’t just affect the team that the player signs with. It affects the entire league, because there are dominoes that fall in place as a result of big deals.
With David Price finding his new home in Boston, who are the winners and losers in Major League Baseball, as a result of this deal?
