5. Brian Hoyer is playing at an all-time high

Everyone is aware that there are quarterbacks in the NFL with a higher pedigree than the journeyman quarterback Brian Hoyer, but since being put back in the starting lineup he has been playing excellent football.

Houston is 4-2 in Hoyer’s six starts on the season and it feels like ages ago the team benched him for Ryan Mallett. Overall on the season the Michigan State product has completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 1,909 yards. He has also been extremely efficient, as he has 15 touchdowns to just five interceptions.

On a team so defensive-minded, all the Texans need from Hoyer is that smart play and they will continue to win football games. With the exception of a Week 1 debacle, Hoyer has not put his team in bad positions, which is saying something considering how poorly they have performed in the run game.

The formula for this team was supposed to be a heavy dose of running back Arian Foster pounding the ball and keeping the defense fresh. Foster misses several weeks before returning to the field looking like a shell of his former self. Another injury finished his season prematurely and more fell on the shoulders of Hoyer.

The quarterback has handled it well, and the trust factor between he and head coach Bill O’Brien has a lot to do with the success they have shared thus far.
