Cleveland Browns: Paxton Lynch, QB- Memphis

I’d be wise to repeat many of the same criticisms I had for San Francisco selecting Jared Goff at the five-spot for my justification for panning the Browns if they take Lynch with the second pick. Yes, the Browns are in serious need of a franchise player under center, but you can’t reach for one at the drop of the draft. They should have learned their lesson with Tim Couch on the subject.

When you have the second overall pick in the NFL Draft you have plenty of needs you can fill. In fact, you are likely flush with spots on the field where you can significantly upgrade the roster. This is certainly the case with the Browns. They need talent and shouldn’t be boxed into any selection based on what position the prospect plays.

In particular, passing on Ole Miss DT Robert Nkemdiche would be a colossal error if he’s available with the second pick. He’s an enormous talent who could transform the Browns defense from day one. Lynch is not a player who can have that sort of immediate impact. I have questions about whether or not he can ever have that sort of effect on an NFL team.

Lynch isn’t a bad prospect, but he certainly isn’t a great one befitting the No. 2 overall pick. With the second selection in the draft, I have to love you. That’s why Lynch would be a significant error for a Browns franchise that can’t afford any more mistakes.
