San Francisco 49ers: Jared Goff, QB- California

I understand that it’s almost impossible to in in the NFL without a franchise quarterback. I also understand that the 49ers have one of the weakest quarterback stables in the league. That still doesn’t mean they should select a quarterback at the five-spot in the draft, where McShay has them taking Jared Goff.

The only thing worse than passing on a franchise signal caller at the top of the draft is taking a guy who doesn’t end up being a franchise quarterback. That’s what the Niners would be doing here if they went with Goff. He’s got the potential to be an adequate NFL starter, but he’s not the franchise-altering guy you need to be looking for with the fifth overall pick.

It’s not as if San Francisco doesn’t have other options at that spot in the draft either. There’s some great talent slated to be available at that spot. In fact, one of my personal favorites, Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsill, might be there and he’d be a much better choice than Goff. You can’t pass on a franchise left tackle in favor of an average quarterback. That’s what the 49ers would be doing here. It’s those kinds of mistakes that tend to get NFL General Managers fired more often than not. San Francisco’s front office should be very careful at this spot in the draft.
