Round 2: Will Redmond, CB (Mississippi State)

Mississippi State Bulldogs senior cornerback Will Redmond had the chance to play himself into a potential first-round valuation, but a season-ending ACL injury ultimately squashed any hope of that happening. That said, he’s still a high quality prospect that shouldn’t fall out of the second round. If he’s sitting there at the end of the second, the Patriots would be foolish to not try to address a serious area of concern for them.

Redmond is a bit undersized for his position at only 5-11, 186 pounds, but that doesn’t entirely deplete his ability to make plays in coverage. He has the speed that makes him capable of staying with almost any receiver that he’s matched up against, while also possessing the ability to go up and make plays on the ball if that’s what a situation necessitates. In addition, his ball skills are also of a high quality.

What scouts needed to see from Redmond prior to his injury was an improved level of consistency in coverage, but that opportunity was obviously taken away. Still, the physical tools for Redmond to succeed in the NFL are there and, for a team like the Patriots that could use some bolstering of their secondary, adding a young prospect like Redmond who has the potential to outplay even a second-round valuation is well worth the selection.
