5. Jim Schwartz

Schwartz has been left out on the streets this season after being inexplicably let go by the Buffalo Bills as their defensive coordinator. The Bills defense has regressed to 16th in scoring defense under the direction of Rex Ryan. The former Detroit Lions head coach may be just the solution the Eagles need to fix their perpetually leaky defense. The Eagles currently rank 30th in total defense with 394.9 yards allowed per game. They have also allowed 26.7 points per game, which is 28th in the league. Although Kelly’s offense has certainly not panned out as expected, the defensive side of the ball has been even more dreadful.

The Eagles will definitely consider hiring a coach that can light a spark on defense. Schwartz can claim a resume filled with relative success as he inherited a Lions team that won zero games in 2008. He led them to a playoff berth in the 2011 season before two consecutive disappointing seasons led to his dismissal.

His performance as the Bills defensive coordinator will also draw plenty of attention, as they possessed the best pass rush in the NFL during his stint. They led the league in sacks with 54, so Schwartz should be considered as a defensive guru. The Bills may have been better off if they hired him as their head coach instead of Ryan.
