5. Charlie Strong isn’t working out in Austin

In 2009, there was not a hotter assistant in college football than Florida Gators defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. Strong was one of two wildly successful coordinators on Urban Meyer’s staff in Gainesville, the other being former offensive coordinator and current Mississippi State Bulldogs head coach Dan Mullen.

Strong turned his defensive coordinator gig at Florida into a great four-year stint as the head coach of the Louisville Cardinals, then in the Big East/American. At Louisville, Strong’s Cardinals went 37-15 (20-9), including an upset victory over the Florida Gators in the Sugar Bowl.

After Mack Brown was let go, Strong emerged as the man to replace him in Austin. However, it has been dark times under Strong in Austin, as Texas is a sub-.500 team at what should be the preeminent college football power in the Power 5.

Normally it isn’t wise to fire a head coach until after year three for the fear of hurt a university’s perception with regards to job security. However, Texas is a job that one doesn’t say no to. There are about maybe four programs in the NCAA that can claim this. Texas has a ton of talent in-state and the biggest brand in college football, so why couldn’t it entice the hottest young head coach in college football in Tom Herman should it decide to go in that direction.
