4. Texas is now No. 6 in the state

Call it the curse of the Longhorn Network, but since Texas created its own TV station that effectively dissolved the former Big 12, the Longhorns have now become the sixth best college football team in the State of Texas.

That’s right. Texas is now sixth. In no particular order, they are behind the Baylor Bears, the TCU Horned Frogs, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Big 12, the Texas A&M Aggies in the SEC, and now the Houston Cougars in the American. Rice feels seventh at the moment behind Texas.

When has a blue blood like Texas fallen this far from grace in recent memory in-state? Maybe in conference, but never in-state. That would be like a Pac-12 team in California falling behind all three in-state rivals, Fresno State, and San Diego State.

Hiring Tom Herman would send a message to the supporters of the Longhorns that the University won’t tolerate mediocrity any longer, which has been the Texas Longhorns since losing the National Championship to the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2009.

Texas hasn’t finished in the AP Top 25 since 2012 and haven’t played in a meaningful bowl since the 2009 National Championship. Herman has won two New Year’s Six Bowl games and a national championship in the last two years. Herman knows how to win in this era of college football, something Texas seems to have forgotten.
