4. Secondary Depth

The Arizona Cardinals like to have a lot of defensive backs on the field at once. They even have one in Deone Bucannon playing inside linebacker. General manager Steve Keim has done a great job stocking the team with a talented secondary and plenty of depth.

For most teams, the injury of Tyrann Mathieu, who was having an All-Pro season, would have been crippling and perhaps the final nail in the coffin. However, the Cardinals have done such a good job in acquiring depth over the last few years that they have guys that can step up in his place and get the job done.

It may not be at the level of Mathieu, but those safeties like Rashad Johnson, Tony Jefferson and the recently signed D.J. Swearinger are giving everything they have out on the field to fill the shoes of their injured safety.

At the cornerback spot, Patrick Peterson is back to playing at an All-Pro level after his issues with diabetes and is once again looking like one of the best in the league. Teams are avoiding his side of the field and he effectively shuts down half the field on his side.

Across from him is Justin Bethel, who has made his mark as a Pro Bowl special teams player early in his career. While teams are throwing at Bethel and he’s taking his lumps, he’s also stepping up and making some big plays as well on the inside. Jerraud Powers is another favorite of Arians and of the locker room; he can play anywhere they need him from nickel situations to outside one-on-one situations.

The Cardinals are going to face plenty of great quarterbacks along the way if they’re going to win the Super Bowl. A great secondary will be needed if they’re going to win.

They have the secondary depth to get it done.
