9. Matt Bryant – Giants vs. 49ers, 2003

This one is more on the snapper than Matt Bryant, who is one of the most automatic field goal kickers in the league. But with the Giants leading by 16 heading into the fourth, Jeff Garcia led the 49ers to a wild comeback win.

Perhaps the Giants should’ve known better than to sign someone who had just retired. 41-year-old Trey Junkin was picked up by the Giants a week before this game, and at two critical points in the fourth quarter – when the Giants lined up for a field goal – he botched both snaps. The first one came with 3 minutes left in the game when the Giants had a chance to halt the 49ers’ momentum by extending the lead to 9 points and a two-possession game. Instead, Junkin mistimed the snap and Bryant’s kick went wide left.

The second point came at the end of the game. Eric Johnson gave the 49ers a 39-38 lead, but they missed the two-point conversion giving the Giants the ball back and a chance to win the game. Kerry Collins got his team to the 49ers’ 23-yard line, but once again Junkin’s poorly timed snap didn’t even give Bryant a chance to redeem himself. Coupled with a missed pass interference call, it was a gut-wrenching way to lose a game.
