5. Dominant, balanced defense

The Broncos’ secondary likes to style itself the “No Fly Zone,” and for good reason. They rank No. 1 in the NFL in passing yards allowed. They’re also the only defense in the league with an allowed passing yard average below 200 per game, which is pretty mind-boggling in today’s air-it-out league. Last season, only the Seattle Seahawks had a passing defense that averaged under 200 yards allowed, and they rode it all the way to Super Bowl XLIX.

This defense is also top-10 in every other notable category as well. They’re No. 3 in rushing yards allowed, No. 4 in points allowed, and No. 7 in takeaways. Their turnover differential overall would be much more impressive were it not for Manning’s 17 interceptions through the first nine games of the season.

Television analyst Phil Simms said Sunday that he believed the Broncos had the best defense in the NFL, and the numbers are there to support his statement. Even if Denver has to square off against the plucky Pittsburgh Steelers and their high-octane offense in the Divisional Round, you can bet that the Broncos defense will like their chances.
