Anze Kopitar is expected to sign his eight year extension worth $80 million with the Kings on Friday

The future of the Los Angeles Kings could ride on getting their extension with Anze Kopitar done before he hits the free agent market. After reports surfaced of the two sides being very close to an extension, the extension is most likely going to be signed on Friday.

From LA Kings Insider:

"Kopitar is expected to sign his contract extension Friday, LA Kings Insider learned from a high ranking Kings executive on Thursday morning. Though all signs had previously pointed to a signing and announcement on Thursday, at the moment there are no plans by the team to issue any release on Thursday morning. Bob McKenzie of TSN reported on Wednesday that the contract is for eight years, with an average annual value of $10-million."

This is huge for the Kings. Anze Kopitar is an elite center and it’s extremely important that teams keep them because you can never have too many of them. Should the contract be the reported $10,000,000 average annual value, that would put him as the third highest paid player in the league per season for the time being.

This is also significant because it likely sets the grounds for Steven Stamkos’s next contract. No matter where Stamkos signs, he’s likely going to do it for more money per season than Kopitar.
