The NHL has announced that Los Angeles will host the 2017 NHL All-Star game in conjunction with the franchise’s 50th anniversary

Over the past 49 years, the city of Los Angeles has gone from a city ruled by the Lakers to one of the best hockey markets in all of North America. The Los Angeles Kings will be celebrating their 50th anniversary as a franchise in 2017. On top of that, the NHL has announced that Los Angeles will host the 2017 NHL All-Star Game.

From NHL.com:

"This is the third time the NHL All-Star Game will be played in Los Angeles, and the second time at Staples Center. The 2002 All-Star Game took place at Staples Center, which opened in 1999. The NHL also held the 1981 All-Star Game at The Forum, the former home of the Kings."

Los Angeles is a perfect host city because it’s a huge city with a lot for tourists and visitors to do in it. That means that it can easily handle the boom in population that is sure to come around the end of January in 2017. It’s certainly a contrast from the last two cities to host the All-Star game (Nashville and Columbus). However, the NHL has had a lot of success while having the All-Star game in Los Angeles so it’s hard to blame the league for giving them another one.

With Los Angeles being the host city, look for the NHL to take a similar approach to the NBA All-Star Game in Toronto and focus on the sports teams around the area.
