Quarterback – Joe Montana

The toughest question on everyone’s mind is who was better between Joe Montana and Tom Brady. Both are outstanding quarterbacks and there likely isn’t a wrong answer to the question. They have very similar stats while competing for the Lombardi Trophy. Both quarterbacks have raised the Lombardi Trophy four times. The difference? Joe Montana has never lost a Super Bowl while Brady has lost two. Montana is the quarterback for this team.

The original “Joe Cool” had a career 127.83 quarterback rating in his four title games, the highest among any passer ever. His 68.03 percent completion percentage ranks third among all quarterbacks. Montana threw for 1,142 passing yards in his career in the NFL’s biggest game which is third all-time among quarterbacks. Most importantly, Montana threw for 11 touchdowns during his four wins and did not threw a single interception. He also ran for two more touchdowns, combining for 13 total touchdowns with zero turnovers. That’s how you win big games.

It could be argued that Montana had Jerry Rice to help him. However, Montana was in charge of the offense and he was a huge part in each of the 49ers’ titles because of his ability to make plays while refusing to turn the ball over. Brady has struggled with that in recent years. That’s what separates Montana from Brady. They have both been legendary in the Super Bowl. But ask Montana what it’s like to turn the ball over in the Super Bowl and he wouldn’t be able to tell you because he never did that.
