2016 NFL offseason: New York Giants needs
Departing Free Agents
Before ever addressing players whose deals are up this offseason, wide receiver Victor Cruz has to be one of the first things that the Giants address this offseason. He’s been oft-injured for the past few seasons and didn’t see the field at all last year. With the fact that New York can save $6.1 million this offseason by cutting him before June 1, you have to imagine that it’s highly likely that the team will do so despite his potential when he’s at his peak.
The Giants have a ton of money coming off of the books this offseason, most notably leaving a big hole at defensive end as Jason Pierre-Paul and Robert Ayers’ deals are both up this offseason. It will surely be interesting to see if the Giants have plans to try and retain either of those two, especially concerning JPP as he was decent once he got on the field last year, but likely not worth to the Giants what he’ll demand on the market at 27 years old.
Cornerback Prince Amukamara is another player whose deal comes up this offseason and another player that the Giants will have to make a decision about. The same can be said about safety Craig Dahl and wide receiver Rueben Randle. With all of the money that they’ll have coming off of the books, whether New York looks to re-sign players or just try to build anew through the draft and free agency will arguably be the biggest story to watch in their offseason.
