Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving confirmed he will be discussing a contract extension with Johnny Gaudreau’s agent.

The Calgary Flames have had a disappointing season after having high hopes this season following last year’s magical playoff run. One of their very few bright spots has been the improvement of forward Johnny Gaudreau. Gaudreau has followed up an impressive rookie campaign with an even more impressive sophomore season. He is set to become a restricted free agent after this season and the Flames are reportedly ready to engage in contract talks with his agent.

Technically, Gaudreau is guaranteed to get an extension of some sort because he’ll be a restricted free agent and he has no arbitration rights. To this point, nothing has been discussed regarding term or money. It is assumed that is what will be discussed this week with Gaudreau’s agent.

The Flames will most likely try to lock him up long-term because if he keeps improving, Gaudreau could price himself out of Calgary. St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko found himself in a very similar fashion last season. He signed an eight-year extension worth $60 million back in July.

The Blues assumed a lot of risk in that deal, but with that risk came the possibility of getting him at a good value. Calgary will likely follow that logic with Gaudreau, though it would be surprising if Gaudreau got more than Tarasenko. It is worth noting that center Sean Monahan, the center on Gaudreau’s line, will also be a restricted free agent. Signing those two long-term will be the top priority for the Flames.
