2016 NFL Free Agency: 5 teams that should sign Eric Berry
By John Buhler
Could All-Pro free safety Eric Berry of the Kansas City Chiefs end up with another AFC West division rival in the San Diego Chargers? While the Chargers aren’t likely going to field a team capable of making an AFC Playoffs run in 2016, they may have a glaring need at free safety if their All-Pro Eric Weddle walks.
Weddle and the Chargers haven’t been on especially great terms the last few years. While Weddle is a California native, the 31-year-old could very well have played his last game in San Diego as a member of the Chargers.
Berry is four years younger than Weddle and has arguably been a more productive player in his six-year NFL career. While the Chargers don’t have a glorious amount of cap space for 2016 with $32 million, just behind the Chiefs for 13th in the NFL, they too could be in a bidding war for the services of Berry in 2016.
With the Chargers’ familiarity with Berry’s unique playing style at safety, they could put him in their secondary alongside good, up-and-coming press corner Jason Verrett to still have a dynamic duo in their defensive backfield should Weddle otherwise walk.
With the Chargers possibly relocating to Los Angeles, playing in a bigger media market might sound appealing for Berry. Should the Chargers stay put in San Diego, playing football in sunny Southern California might entice him to leave the frigid winters of Kansas City in 2016 NFL Free Agency.
