2016 NFL free agency: 5 teams who should sign Marques Colston
Plenty has been made over the past few years about Kansas City’s lack of production at the wide receiver position over the past few years. Jeremy Maclin certainly did his part to remedy the situation last year in his first season in Kansas City, but the Chiefs still need more from the position.
Maclin broke the 1,000-yard mark in 2015 and recorded eight touchdowns, snapping a 21-game streak of no Kansas City receiver finding the end zone. Other than Maclin, the Chiefs top receivers are Albert Wilson and Chris Conley, who combined for about 650 yards last season, and there’s not much on the depth chart behind them.
Colston could slide in as the No. 2 on that depth chart currently, which again may not be an ideal situation, but Kansas City clearly has a need at the position. Even the 520 yards that Colston had last year could be a big help to Kansas City’s offense.
The Chiefs finally broke their lengthy playoff win drought in 2015 and look to be just a couple of pieces away from seriously contending for a Super Bowl. If Conley can live up to his big potential in addition to adding a depth piece like Colston, Kansas City may have enough offense to be a threat once again.
Giving Colston a short deal worth around $3 million could give Kansas City better value than a bigger contract for someone like Jones. The Chiefs are mid-pack with around $22.6 million of cap space, and have a few key free agents of their own, particularly on the defensive side. Saving money at wide receiver could help the Chiefs keep the likes of Sean Smith and Jaye Howard.
