New York Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist believed he should have gotten an injury timeout, but the referees did not agree. So Lundqvist lost his temper on his own net.

It was not a good night for New York Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

During the second period of Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Lundqvist steps out of the crease to stop the Penguins rush. Instead, he collides with his own defenseman, Ryan McDonagh. Lundqvist was visibly shaken up on the play, and expected the referees to call an injury timeout.

When the referees did not blow the play dead, the goalie lost his temper and created his own timeout by knocking the net off.

While that action did result in the play being blown dead, it also led to Lundqvist receiving a delay of game penalty.

Lundqvist did not return for the third period, and it was assumed that it was because he lost his temper. However, Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault clarified that Lundqvist was suffering from neck spasms, and was pulled as a precaution

Backup goalie Antti Raanta played the final period of the 4-1 loss to the Penguins. Lundqvist allowed three goals on 22 shots during his two periods of work.
